Iirc, the sauce itself was actually originally created sometime around 1831 in Europe for King George IV. It started being marketed to the public/internationally closer to 1862, but this was still in Europe. It didn't come to America until 1895. So, I mean, technically, yes, the civil war was going on, but I don't think a former chef of the King of England was all that worked up about it
