That, and the black framea cropping them out, are how you can tell the difference. Dead eyes don't stay open on their own

they needed to crop it out so the neural network is not false-trained by the metal hooks. otherwise there would be the risk that the neural network would recognize the metal hooks as a sign of "it's dead".. so dead eyes without metal hooks would maybe not recognized.
I first thought WHY THE FUCK DO WE NEED THIS?!?!
Than I remember in about a ton of movies where they need to scan people's eyes so they pulled the guys eye out to use for the scans. So yeah ok.

yup. but you basicly still could do that.. you would need just to be quick & achieve the scan before 16 hours are running up. first after 16 hours there are enough changes in the eye, that the AI can detect it as dead. so you still could rip out a eye, hold in into a scanner and get entry like in the movies.. if you do it within 16 hours.. :P
