Lyle Burgess also got 5 years probation. But get this, he doesn't even have to register as a sex offender ?!? And they let him plea guilty to Statutory rape, which usually involves someone 15 or older.
Lee Brooker got a life sentence because he had a prior felony from holding up a liquor store at gun point.
Lyle Burgess made a plea deal. The post says “rapist,” but the thing is- he was never convicted of rape. The mother claims she saw him put his hands down the girls pants, he claims he did not. He took a plea deal of “no contest” meaning he didn’t say he was guilty but he also wouldn’t fight any charges. Because there was no trial, no evidence, no cross examination, it’s heresay against heresay. He says he took the plea because he’s old and unhealthy. Some say it’s because he’s guilty and rich. He doesn’t have to register as a sex offender because he isn’t convicted of a crime where that would be mandatory. Either way “is this justice” is a good question. Is it justice to find a man guilty of a crime without a trial or evidence? The DA obviously didn’t think they could get a conviction, or that it was worth it, or they wouldn’t have turned over a plea. If he did it he is a piece of shit and deserves horrors beyond imagine. But- justice doesn’t punish people without a conviction.
That's right...I remembered reading about it but couldn't remember all the details. I was just reading more about it and the mom says she saw him touch her several times, which makes me wonder why she didn't say anything sooner. Either way, that poor girl...either she was abused or she's being put in an awful position by her parents
Agreed. True or not it’s terrible, either growing up not knowing or remembering it happened and seeing him walk. Hell, no justice can make that better. I hold sex offenders, particularly pedophiles, in the lowest regard of humanity. That said, that is why it is important to be diligent and prudent. The very accusation is enough to ruin lives, to stir good people into a frenzy and cloud vision with rage. Without protecting the accused until proven guilty, we open the door for petty accusations and mob justice against the innocent. A society where 60% of criminals go unpunished is better than one where 60% of innocent people are punished for crimes they didn’t commit. The justice system exists to protect society, not to punish wrong. That is a tool but not the goal. For my money- I think he’s probably guilty and only got a plea because he’s connected. I think that’s a shame, but if he is innocent I don’t know that trying an old and ailing man for a crime that he didn’t do is better.
