PSA: In gerneral, the “darker” the chocolate, the more dangerous to a dog. Milk chocolate is about 11% cocoa on average. A relatively healthy dog can handle about 1oz of milk chocolate per pound of body weight. As a guideline, reduce the “safe” amount proportional to the percentage of cocoa in the chocolate above 11%. THAT DOESN’T MEAN IT IS OK TO GIVE A DOG CHOCOLATE. DON’T. It means that if your healthy 2yo Retriever or Corgi eats a chocolate square or a few M&M’s it will probably be ok. Dogs generally get very hyper as a sign they’ve had chocolate. At high levels you may notice trouble breathing, tremors/shakes. If in doubt, call a vet or if seemingly severe seek emergency treatment. Based on the animals weight and health, and how much of what kind of chocolate it ate, a vet may have you induce vomiting, advise you to get emergency care, or just tell you to keep an eye on the dog and make sure it has lots of fluids. Just know chocolate isn’t like dog cyanide but can be dangerous.
