Literally everyone who knows anything about history knows the parties switched sides in the 20s to 40s. You could make the same thing for conservatives. Nike makes an ad with Cappernick? Haven't seen the conservatives this mad since we took away their slaves.
Inhales... So between 1860 and 1930 there was a gradual shift between policies in both major parties. The Republicans started to favor small government and more conservative values, while the democrats started to favor bigger government and more socialistic policies so to say that the Republican party that we see today is the same as its initial conception is not only inaccurate but factually misleading. The joke plays on that misconception.
Things change. You can’t liken modern democrats to those over 100 years ago anymore than you can compare two modern democrats and know where they stand on abortion or guns. To illustrate- John McCaine was a die hard republican who was seen as a conservative most of life- but in recent times compared to most of the GOP he was labeled as a progressive liberal despite largely keeping the same values. The Republican Party as an organization has shifted far to the right making former conservatives seek liberal, and the democrats.... oh lord. I don’t know where to start, but that party is in chaos. So you can’t tell just by being “democrat” or “republican” what you’re going to get. What we once called “tea party” Republicans we now call moderates. Who is so involved in “theor party” anyway- why do we need to back old rich people in Washington like they’re the local sports team? There are plenty of assholes on both sides of the isle.
OH! And you want to talk about “misleading” or “making statements?” Do you really think based on everything we know about Abe Lincoln that he would support half of what the modern Republican Party represents, the current administration or its policies? Can you see the “Great Emancipator” wearing a red stovepipe saying “make America great again” or do you think he’d feel like he already fought one civil war? Do you think he’d see the actions of the current administration and consider them appropriate professional decorum for the offices of the state? Do you think he’d support actively trying to divide the American people by our differences and create schisms in a country he fought and ultimately died to unite? Do you think he’d proudly call himself a republican in 2018- or do you think he’d look at things and either try to undo all this mess that we’ve created or give up and climb back to the grave rather than see us trying to build literally and metaphorical walls around us?
Your head.

It’s interesting how the parties are evolving.
