Maybe "meeting the bare necessities to avoid homelessness" is a bad standard to not count as broke? Personally I think staying in a house, eating, and keeping your job should be possible while still having some spending money.

I dunno.... if your fridge is that full and you have no invested money you might have your priorities slightly skewed.

My pockets look like that because my money is all digital. Honestly, I just roll my eyes whenever I encounter a "cash only" situation. I've become the personification of the 1st world problems meme.

If this is your situation, you are in the top percentile of wealth in the world. I cant give you actual stats, but I know you are comparatively pretty darn rich!

My pockets are full on chapstick and kleenex and my gas tank is about 1/2 tank...what does that mean?

I mean, you still need money for rent. And bills. Not even getting started on school, which most people need gas for their car to drive to school and work.
