All joking aside, except for extremely powerful cars (like say 500+hp) the brakes are waaaay more powerful than the engine. So you'll come to a stop, and if you're in an automatic transmission, you'll just overheat and damage the transmission.
I say "just" because if anyone remembers several years ago the Toyota unintended acceleration problem where the throttle got stuck open, the simple solution would have been to just use the brakes and let the engine rev...
If it's a rear wheel drive vehicle, with rear drum brakes, the tires will spin. Discs brakes will usually hold an engine, even a powerful one, but drums will just eat the pads up.
