Correct me if I’m wrong but if that worker is not salaried, not scheduled to work, and not on call then I believe he’s well within his rights to refuse the call in. Good luck though with your manager when you go back to work. But good job, mate.

Manager: "thanks. i too wish you good luck.. on your next job."
I once had someone from my work call me on my day off to ask if I could come in the next day. I said sure. Showed up the next day, said good morning to everyone, they said good morning back, I swiped in, and then my boss looked at me in sudden confusion and asked "why are you here?"
'
I explained someone had called saying they needed me to come in today.
'
After much confusion and asking around it was determined no one had any clue who the hell had called me, but they didn't even need me after all anyway
I had manager who called me at 5 in the morning, asking me to come in to work. When I explained that it was too last minute, that I had prior comittments that couldn't be postponed, he threatened to fire me.
Hospitality folks.
