People have short memories- especially kids who weren’t alive to experience much history. It’s a catch 22. It’s often the same people who want to US to pull out of a foreign country that will then criticize the US for bombing a country and then leaving. It’s often the same people who call the US an imperialist nation that will criticize it for not occupying and absorbing territory but leaving. Yes- for many conflicts we could argue all day that the USA shouldn’t have been there to begin. But you can’t chane history. Once boots hit the ground forces are committed and you have a choice to make- stay or leave. So which would be better? The US leaving the conflict region after devastating it, or sticking around for decades and bringing American government styles and culture to the region, maybe even absorbing it? Neither tends to be perfect. But many people don’t understand the logistics of conflict, the politics or basic history.

The USA occupied Japan post WW2 and really never left. Destroyed a generational dynastic system of government, worked on breaking up the Zaibatsu system of family owned monopolies, and had HUGE impact on the culture and even basic workings of Japan. It was a fear of Asian communism that stopped the “democratization” of Japan and left many zaibatsu functioning in a new lateral monopoly as opposed to verticals monopoly. The mass post war industry of Japan is in large part due to this policy change as GHQ wanted to prioritize economy first to present communist sentiment. That led to the 1980’s Japanese industrial domination. But so much more about japan from anime to Godzilla to panty vending machines and more is a direct consequence of western occupation. The closest thing to such radical cultural shift was the Meiji era and that took far longer to effect deep changes to the society.

So the very presence of western occupation tends to radically change the fabric and direction of a society and send lasting ripples throughout the world. Yet there are threats which our best tool is determined to be force. In those cases there is a choice between not actin and taking a serious risk to a nation and its people, or acting knowing there will be collateral damage. It’s more complex when you are trying as an outsider to protect a people from its government. Where human rights and other violations are common. If you have the power to help do you? If you could stop the Holocaust but knew you’d cause collateral damage and that it “wasn’t your fight” is it right to sit it out? It’s easy to arm chair quarterback from safety. I’m glad I don’t make these decisions for a living.

Except all birds of prey do that, as well as all other predators.

All birds do that period. Even if they are just attacking a piece of bread on the sidewalk
