I once deleted everything from my google drive and convinced my teacher I got a virus so i got an extra week for a paper. I just recovered it all later. Learn to play the system.
You could. But learning to game the system is important. When I realised that most teachers frankly dont care enough to bother triple checking that your story isnt bullshit (provided its believable), my life at uni changed.. I realised that if you ask nicely, most will grant you an extended deadline, because its not like they're gonna grade all the papers in a week, so it doesnt change jack shit for them, but going through the trouble of exposing you is a hassle
You also need to learn which teachers WILL NOT take shit and make sure you dont mess around with them.
Sure its not as good as doing everything on time, but it sure taught me a lot in terms of social skills, being able to ask for favors and what not in a polite way, and asking for doable favors. Those ARE skills that are usefull in day to day life.
It’s a skill you are better off not having. In university when nothing actually matters it may be useful from time to time but not when you become an adult for two reasons. One, systems resist being gamed. Every person I have seen over the years that tried to game the system on a regular basis eventually got hosed. Two, people should be able to depend on each other. Being responsible is better for you and the people around you. Skating out of a deadline with your boss may benefit you in the short term but probably screws over the people who needed it done on time. Maybe you can convince your kid that you had a legit reason to miss his game/recital but wouldn’t it be better to just be there? Kill a hooker? Maybe you can get the charges dropped but then what about the next guy who needed that hooker? He’s sexually frustrated, that’s what. Don’t be that guy.
Obviously, I transitionned it the smart way in real fight (actually graduated and working now). As I said, there are teachers who wont agree to give you a special treatment, thats kinda the same in the workplace. You have responsabilities you cant make up excuses for.
But knowing how to ask someone to do something for you, knowing how much you can ask, and doing so politely is definitely valuable.
