What if that IS what they looked like?? We hust bred them to have the faces they do now.

that's like a human emote of what the cat was feeling. Props to those medieval painters.

The reason things look so weird in that artwork is because that was just the modern style. They were perfectly capable of making realistic paintings, but that just wasn't what was the "thing" to do back then.
