During a three day dog sledding trip we took in Finland this was just business as usual. The dogs have to keep running. The sled only stops when the drivers says so. So if they have to go, they do it while running.
Where we went, the dogs are very well cared for, by the way. The guide knows them all by name and character and they sleep in padded dog houses at the overnight locations. They eat once a day, about a kilo: a chunk of salmon and regular dog food mixed up with gravy.
