One time, we had visitors and one of them complained that we had our dogs caged and said we were bad owners. It wasn't until one of our dogs opened the cage, went outside to potty, and came back in in which we they realised our dogs like their cages and they are never locked. My dogs just closed their cages.
One of our dogs just likes sitting in hers. We put a blanket over it. It's safe and quiet, and it's the place she gets her food and treats. She puts her favourite toys there, the works.
When my dog was young had to be caged while we were at work because he destroyed furniture when unsupervised. We rescued him from a shelter. The 8 hours/day caged at my house was still better than the 24 hours he was caged there! This ignorant post is why some working people don't rescue at all.
Same for our previous dog, who was a whirlwind-like sheep dog. We never got any flak for having her locked up, though. But it's ignorant to criticize animal training methods when you don't have an adolescent working dog.
