He made a million dollar shrimping company, recipient of the Medal of Honor, went to China to Play Olympic Ping-pong, made famous the words "Shit Happens" and the "Smily Logo" and also made the company record of reassembling a rifle! This man, is an inspiration. He inspired lieutenant Dan so much, that he changed and by that point in the story Dan was a nut case, a broken man.

Forrest gump is the embodiment of the american dream. It is showing us that despite our starting circumstances we can still achieve many great things if we focus and strive for them.
