A number of countries including Finland, Belgium, Ireland, Italy, and the Netherlands all did away with the 1 euro coin. And other countries like Australia and Canada did away with their similarity valued 1 cent coins.
There are still plenty of places that use 1 cent coins, but they are worth so little that it isn't actually good for the economy to keep using them. Not to mention that many cost more to make than they are worth. This is a major reason for their discontinuation.
The list of countries that has done away with former currency of low value is huge. The United States (I bring this up because its important for Americans to consider) got rid of the half penny in 1857 due to it being considered not worth enough to bother with. At the time its was worth more than 10x what the penny is worth today. And a majority of why we still have the penny is zinc lobbyist, who profits from the U.S. buying zinc to make pennies.
