My grandpa once said to me: “I went out and fought the Japanese so that you could turn around and buy a car from them.” I told him that I thought the reason he fought that war was so that we wouldn’t still be fighting it 40 odd years later. He took a pause on that one. He never bought a car that wasn’t American- but he did chill out a little near the end. I think he realized that at some point, you’ve got to put the conflicts of the past asides unless you want you and your children and their children to have to keep fighting them forever. We all fight so hard for a better world but many of the same people who are seeking change to benefit us all get scared when change actually happens- as if they never realized that for this world to change to a better one they would have to leave behind the world they knew. Sometimes we just get comfortable with functioning amidst broken things, and when they finally get fixed we can’t help feel things are a little out of place.
