Armadillos are a pest creatures and are prone to carrying rabies. So in the South alot of farmers just shoot them to get rid of them. That being said the guy must have be using a really small caliber or low velocity rounds to have it ricochet like that. A shotgun is the preferred weapon and you can even use bird shot in a pinch and still have good results. This dude must have been using a handgun or something of equivalent lethality.
