Like money? Cause your laptop or your ID or whatever is worth more than a burger. Kind gesture, and if they are actually just a down on their luck soul looking for a means to necessities, this is a sweet and prudent gesture. Unfortunately they are more likely someone who doesn’t “need” to steal, but who realizes it can be quite lucrative. My overall car advice? Pretend like you have a motorcycle or a soft top. Like your windows aren’t even there or your doors are always unlocked. If you wouldn’t leave something in your car under those circumstances- then don’t leave it on your car. Or... for the smartipantses out there- just don’t leave things in your car. Maybe if you have a very secure locking trunk that can’t be opened from the cabin... but general rule is that even things you don’t mind being stolen can get your car broken into and cause damage or problems.

We had someone break into our car and not steal the radio, but my daughter's friggin carseat and my mom's incontinence pads. Seriously.

I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve had friends with similar stories. I once had a car which I had removed most of the mechanical parts and valuable interior parts from parked in my driveway. Someone broke in to it, and I suppose from frustration, they just decided to use a screw driver I’d been working on the car with and stab holes in the seat. They didn’t even take the screwdriver. An owner of a car dealership I worked for of all people gave me this advice on buying a new car: “If you had $40k in cash right now, would you put it on a pallet at the curb in front of your house?” An interesting thought in general, but it still fits the discussion. Anything we leave in our cars- even the cars themselves, is a target for vandalism or theft, with the only real deterrents being fear of consequences or moral qualms. Essentially the good graces of whoever passes by.

And if you are among the millions who live in apartments and don't have access to garages you are really just out of luck

That’s pretty much the point. More people in the world don’t have garages than likely do. So it’s sort of one of those things where one must make the most prudent choices and mitigate risk as much as is practical for their situation.
