From what I understand, he became much more religious after the birth of his son. The whole thing kind of alienated his then wife Anna Farris, which helped lead to their separation.

yeah but they probably wouldn't be in that situation if gamora had just went right and followed his plan. either it would have gone the same way, starlord would be dead, or they could have defeated Thanos. so, yes, while star lord let his emotions get in his way, gamora did it first and that's why she was killed, which is what caused quill to freak out.
