How does that spoil the movie? It's pretty much known after about 30 minutes that it's a thing that morphs into anything, it's interesting to watch even if you already know the basic idea, the practical effects are dope, and the end is still a masterpiece.
is it however scary? you made it sounds like it might be fun to watch but i scare easily and i don't want to watch it if it's like ... nightmare material.

The fear evoked by the movie is mostly from the paranoia it causes, with occasional bouts of gross-out gore.
It's not exactly scary.... It's just unsettling and the atmosphere of it is creepy AF. It's a really good movie, just make sure you go with the Carpenter version and not the remake.
In a lot of ways it reminds me of "Sphere"..... or "Sphere" reminds me of "The Thing"... either way...
Actually, another good comparison, and a more recent one, would be "The Grey". While on the surface they may seem wildly different (especially in how they restrict space... since The Grey restricts space by people not wandering off), they both hold about the same amount of tension throughout.
