Similar idea to that of a car. Keeps you from becoming a flying object.

Just a fun FYI: This is a joke and also a common misconception people believe. There is no practical technology that could save your life when you impact the ground surrounded by many tons of plane and fuel. Period. The G forces alone can kill you from deceleration. If the plane breaks up or explodes- your seat doesn’t matter. There will be seats all over the place for possibly hundreds of miles depending on how and when the plane broke up. So they aren’t to save your life in crashes or to identify your body. Beyond reasons above consider that passengers often swap seats, and many airlines do not have assigned seats at all. You seat by boarding order which is by check in order at the gate. The belts are mostly for turbulence and rough landings. You don’t usually spring up in turbulence. What you’re feeling is the plane coming down fast, and you staying in place in mid air until you meet seat again. If you aren’t buckled, the plane can literally fall on you, or you fall on it, etc
