I believe many practicing psychologists got into the field for that reason.

I’ve not yet met one that wasn’t themselves a little “off” in some way- and most I’ve talked to about it have said that wither they started with a desire to help and then got facilitated with what was wrong with them- or vice versa. So anecdotally from my experience it checks out.

Most schools have some sort of student council if available, and there are many low or no cost programs for therapy for those who are young or low income. Just as a PSA to people who think therapy might help them but don’t think they can afford it. There are often options available. Sadly I know that in some pocket cases there are circumstances that really do make it impractical to find help- but usually there are resources for most people to get help- again sadly they might take time or require lots of hoops be jumped through, or they may not be well advertised and finding them can be difficult. If you’re struggling though there is help for you. Please don’t give up.

That's why there are so many super shitty shrinks around. Trying to analyze and treat yourself is about as smart an idea as a lawyer defending himself in court.

It depends on the person really, if they are strong enough to deal the truth, they can do it. But it's always a safe bet to go to another professional.
