Without being sarcastic- I can say that I didn’t miss the fact that it was intended as a joke. I didn’t find it funny- subject matter asides- but Tastes vary in humor. That said- when we throw the subject matter back in there- a good test for jokes is wether or not the subject would find them funny. I can’t say that a Holocaust survivor wouldn’t laugh and laugh at this- but I suspect the vast majority would not. There’s something about the systematic torture and eradication of a group coupled with the ever present reality of antisemitism that really just makes me not get much of a laugh out of this. But as I say- even if we disregard all that I wouldn’t find it funny- the presentation is weak and the punchline is a well trodden and lazy fallback of such jokes. So even in being “dark” or “edgy” I see it as a failure- and if one is going to tell an insensitive joke it can at least be a well crafted one.
See- to me- that classic gem is a funny dark joke. Yes- hunger is a serious issue in real life and a terrible thing for many. But it’s clever, there’s word play, thought, delivery, creativity. Hunger is also a general and generic thing that most people can somewhat relate to. We also aren’t talking about an actual situation. It’s also true. If everyone got food- there wouldn’t be hunger. Therefore while the thought in reality is unpleasant- it’s also a fact and not one that can be completely avoided in reality. The humor is in the word play, the darkness is in the subject matter. When the dark subject matter is the entire point of he joke and there’s nothing clever about it or any substance asides just being terrible- that’s not what I call a good joke. It’s the lousy fart joke of dark humor. Crass for the sake of crass and hoping to fall on an audience that is sympathetic to a root ideology or just plain easily amused.
Poor phrasing on my part. I was tired after work. I don’t see being easily amused or having simple tastes as bad either. I actually see that more as a plus.
On a serious note though, at least it's better than most lame pun jokes which I've seen online. Eh.
