Oh, so you’re telling me there is a direct correlation between a customer asking for a straw, and a turtle dying? What, do you kill the turtles yourselves? Wait, so there’s NOT a direct correlation? Wow!
As a sensible person, I’m more likely to not give as much attention to an exaggerated issue beacuse of my knowledge of the issue. Use truth, not exaggerations.
The truth is it happens more than you can think. We use about 500 million straws a day. And alot of those end up in the oceans. Sea life can get it lodged in thier nose and get it stuck in their stomach and so on. If a creature who needs to hold it's breath under water has a straw stuck in it's nose it makes it hard to hold it's breath and probably painful. The poor thing would have to stay close to the surface. Exposing it's self to other sea life that could easily hunt it.
So yeah the straw thing is pretty important.
If you still need a straw do what I started doing I bought a pack of hard plastic easy to clean straws from eBay. I have had them for 2 months now and I love them. I have some in the car and my purse. My kid and husband have a set as well.
I get what they're trying to say but why would it be an issue at all? When you have a drink with a straw it isn't as if you're going to take the straw with you and throw it in the nature somewhere. You're most likely going to leave your glass and the bar would be responsible for managing it afterwards. They could recycle but that isn't even a point in this argument- how the hell would you ordering a drink with a straw kill a turtle? What kills them is improper waste management and in this case it is not the fault of the customer.
