This may work for some companies but it's not really viable for many. Now the final goal of all businesses is to make money. But in order to do that you have to employees and a service/product. In order for companies to remain in business they need to do more than just break even. This is because markets are constantly changing and technology is constantly evolving. Now these kinds of costs are taken out of the net profit and reinvested into the company. You also have to take into account what price the market is willing to pay for your service/product. The danger many companies face is that while increasing their workers pay in considerable amounts, such as company wide pay increases, they may lose their ability to reinvest or even break even. The only viable choice would then be to raise the cost of the service/product. Of course the market may not be willing to pay the increase in cost which means less sold, less profit, and less viability. So then you have remove, read lay off
employees, to reduce the strain on the company. This in turn places more stress on those remaining and we're back to square one. Now I'm not advocating against raises. I would love to get more than just my yearly raise. But I'm also aware of the income and expenses of where I work because of my position. Even though I work for a rather large company my location runs a fine line between the employees we can afford and the amount we need. This is also something that fluctuates on monthly basis. So what we can afford in a really busy month is not what we can afford in a slower month. Is it fair then to hire people, train them (which really cuts into our margin), and then let them go? To cover the cost of training on average we need four months of work per employee. Yet we may only need/can afford the extra help for two months. How do we solve this? We hire mainly part time workers. But since they're part time they may have other restraints on their time like a second job so scheduling can
be difficult or impossible to adequately meet our needs. TL:DR It would be great if all companies could afford to just give employees a raise to help ease their stress it's not always possible. Instead, all we may be able to do is "yoga". But at least we are trying. There are exceptions of course but it a finer line than many like to think.
It is viable. The entire "economy" is nothing more than a fucking idea that we all agree upon. You CAN change the idea. It's going to be really hard, you'll fail, but the possibility is there.
Don't take that as a capitalism vs socialism economic policy wish. I could see how what I said, since it was vague, couldn't be taken as that. It isn't.
Change can also be good or bad.. or as I prefer it, a bit of both! :D
