Toxodon platensis, meaning "Bow Tooth", was a species of South American hoofed mammals belonging to the order Notoungulata, a group of indigenous hoofed mammals native to South America. They were likely the most common large animal of the time (first emerging around 11.6 million years ago and only going extinct 5000 years ago due to human predation), and were relatively large, measuring up to 8 feet 10 inches long and up to 3120 pounds. Resembling both a rhinoceros and a hippopotamus, it likely lived much like a hippo, living in rivers and feeding on water plants. Of note is one of the first collectors of Toxodon fossils was none other than Charles Darwin, buying a skull from a Uruguayan farmer for 18 pence, sparking a debate in Europe over evolution and natural selection.
My 8yr old daughter loves dinos and gets very excited when I come across these pictures and even happier when you put such an intelligent detailed comment explaining them, it's more fun then just googling them it's almost a game now, shell come in "hey mom see any dinos today" and it's a bonding thing for us. So thank you for your impact on our relationship.
