Yes. Most birds have hollow bones and are surprisingly light. In most species of flying bird a lot of the perceived mass is feathers and air between layers. To be able to fly birds must be fairly light, like an aircraft is is not only harder to get more weight airborne and control flight, but it requires more fuel to sustain flight. Biology tends to be about efficiency, life forms adapting to physics and their environments. Hence evolution shouldn’t be though of as “improvement” but as adaptation and specialization. Evolution can actually make a species more “fragile” because it evolves to require very specialized conditions. Hence why long lived and durable species tend to be relatively simple and adaptable as opposed to complex “apex” species.
