The funny thing is that in each period of history there have been plenty who thought the styles of the day were eyesores or otherwise unpleasant. Looking back through history that which was despised often becomes beloved by the future. Someday you’ll have people complaining that utilitarian and brutalist buildings were replaced with other designs, and the cycle will continue. I do generally prefer more elaborate and interesting architecture. Although to be fair the 1960’s saw plenty of iconic and loved or quirky designs of their own pop up- which feeding the humor- many have torn down or want to tear down these structures as eyesores as well. Eaves, Johnson, FL wright- all mid century designers of “gaudy” buildings that are now held as art but were at one time torn down to build more conventional homes.
in my experience, a lot of the time if something *looks* good, it's a huge pain in the ass to build or maintain
people probably got tired of repeatedly dealing with dumb shit and were like "alright fuck this, plain boring buildings now"
We want green buildings that are net zero, carbon usage! We want good wifi reception at every nook and cranny.
Ohhhh....modern buildings don't look as good as the ones that were built with terrible use of scarce resources and terrible ongoing energy usage. Also, where's my participation trophy?
It’s crazy right? It’s almost as if these people think architecture is some sort of mix between engineering and art- where with a given set of constraints and materials an architect is supposed to design a functional and quality building that makes good use of space and provides features to the users of the space while also somehow meeting ergonomic and aesthetic goals! That’s like asking a doctor to be good at medicine AND have a good bed side manner! What the heck do they think these people are? Some sort of professionals who went to school to learn this stuff? I mean- something being functional AND beautiful? Pfft. What’s next? Car makers hiring design studios to make people moving boxes pretty? I bet these people expect fancy pretty furniture too instead of using milk crates- and they probably buy clothes instead of wrapping themselves in bed sheets and duct tape too. Kids.
But the participation trophy would have to go to the person who thinks its unfair to ask more from designers wouldn’t it? I mean- isn’t it the OPPOSITE spirit of a participation trophy to say “you did well- but not well enough, and we want you to try harder?” Unless what you’re saying is that you believe in participation trophies and think that people having standards and demanding more is bad? You do understand the reason we don’t live in thatch hits anymore is because people said “this works- but I want it to be better.” We kept asking for ways to make things work better and to be more aesthetically pleasing...” that’s literally how we evolve technology and discover and develop new technologies and styles and techniques.
