Or, you can remember what side your gas cap is on, and drive next to the pump with that side facing it.

There's a lot of reasons we don't do that in America, first and foremost being it's hard to throw your debit card into a slot 14 feet in the air.
Also our pumps have to be made so they can rip off if someone forgets to hang it back up and drives off with it. The ones hanging from the ceiling are retractable and don't have this feature so if someone is stupid enough to drive off with it still in, they may end up ripping the whole unit down.
