Well now- it’s important not to fall too far off the rails and it doesn’t matter which side of the rails you jump off- off is still off. So no- rubbing lemon on your body isn’t going to cure pancreatic cancer. However- just because SOME claims of homeopathy are fake- doesn’t mean all are. Many medical breakthroughs even in the 20/21st centuries have come from “tribal” medicine and herbology when someone noticed that a native people were using some innocuous thing as medicine and it seemed to have an effect. Science doesn’t have all the answers. It’s LOOKING for them. That’s important to remember. Sea salt is VERY unlikely to have ass to do with asthma- but it can improve mood in theory- hell, thanks to “placebo effect” sometimes the mind does things without medicine- and that’s an aspect science is still looking into as well- the exact role of the mind over the body. So... don’t turn your back on medicine, but also maybe try to keep an open mind.
The human endocrine system is a perfect example of something science just doesn’t quite understand. We more or less know what hormones are in the body and what they do- but we don’t REALLY know. We cant just add a little of this hormone and block a little of that one and get the exact results we want. We know that individuals bodies react differently to the same stimuli. We know that there is a complex interaction between food, body chemistry, drugs/medicine, and environment. A simple glass of grapefruit juice or milk can derail the best treatment modern medicine has.
So some people do take the whole “alternative medicine” thing way too far. But, some people also take arrogance and certainty in facts from a system which is based on the fundamental idea that everything is a theory too far too. Simply put we aren’t so much better off than our ancestors who used leaches to treat “demon blood.” We like to think we are, and we’ve made progress, but we still can’t answer fundamental questions of human biology. So maybe no need to be a jerk about it either. I don’t believe in chiropractors. I think it’s quackery, and there is little or no evidence to the contrary. Yet- millions of people, even some people I know love the chiropractor and swear by the discipline.
And you know what? Having seen them before and after their visits, the relief they feel is real wether chiropractic practice is a fancy form of massage or an actual medical science. I wouldn’t stand by if they refused to see a doctor and went to their chiropractor for a broken spine, but if they have some malady and want to try the chiropractor and then go to the Dr. with the degree from a school that doesn’t have a P.O. box address if it doesn’t work- ok. Cool. Do you.
Also, sometimes doctors are just as bad in actually identifying and helping the problem, treating the symptoms with painkillers instead of finding the cause, and then going to an alternative healer might actually help if they are looking to treat the cause instead. Not all doctors, but sometimes you get a shitty one.
A classmate of mine's arm kept stinging / going pins and needles from the elbow down, and the doc just gave her painkillers on repeat and told her to do a scan if it doesn't get better in a few months.
She didn't have money or medical, so she went to an alternative healer instead - turns out she had a piece of branch/thorn stuck in her elbow which routinely prodded the nerve - he took/cut it out and since then she was fine.
Normal doc didn't even bother to ask or check for injury, so bad doctoring on his part and good investigation on the healer's part saved the day.
I’m sorry to hear that. And it’s very true. Between pressures from profit entities like pharmacom and administration, legal liabilities, the huge stress and patient loads... distorts aren’t likely to listen to more than the first few seconds of what you say, and are most likely to diagnose and recommend based on the most common ailments that fit your description for a person in demographic. In their defense- patients tend to be terrible at accurately reporting symptoms and in this modern age people often self or online diagnose so doctors have learned to tune out the “expert” patient who is simply wrong.
Yeah people are taking this way too far. I don't know about this specific case but his arrogant attitude seems to be denouncing all plants as remedies. many plants work amazing and it's infinitely better than pumping your body full of drugs and chemicals to treat a minor problem.
