They are practicing how to fall without seriously hurting themselves. Its one of the most important lessons for any gymnast or acrobat ect.

Oh! Wow...I never thought of that but it makes sense. The girl on the left seems to have hurt herself though.

She fell BAD, as in ouch, which is why its important. I grew up in an area oddly saturated by Olympic hopeful athletes and while I was NEVER athletic in any way shape or form I learned some random trivia.
