Hillenburg also wanted to end the show at 60 episodes and 1 movie, the network continued on despite this. Hillenburg decided to help out. Nick was working on the spin offs before his death- long before. Even if they came up with the whole show, booked talent, and wrote and animated everything at break neck pace- that’s still a year at least on average, maybe 6 months, maybe? More likely though ideas were being mulled over and politics and logistics set up for quite some time. So it isn’t quite like they waited for the guy to die and pounced. It was technically disrespectful when they continued the franchise without him while he was alive. IF he was alive we don’t know if he would t come around on this the way he did with the show as well. Who knows.
