Belt driven ceiling fans are an antique technology that is primarily a design choice. They are form over function. A single belt driven fan likely costs more than to equip an entire room with traditional fans. Each fan will have a lower effect than a single motor driven fan, and in very large rooms getting enough belt fans to actually provide comfort is next to if not impossible. The single motor does mean that only a single electrical connection is required- so in limited special cases this might be a practical reason to use one if the power system in the room won’t support multiple self powered fans and you don’t want to or cannot upgrade or add connections.

The belt driven fan isn’t usually an energy savings and may even cost more to power than the same number of self powered fans. This is because while there is only one motor, it must be powerful enough to drive multiple fans and make up the transmission loss in motor power from the power transmitted through the belt drive and losses to friction.

The belts need periodically inspected and replaced, and they may also need their tension adjusted. A loose belt can make noise, skip or even fall off completely. Likewise a belt contaminated by grease or other material can make noise and damage the belt or even the Pulleys- and pulleys do wear down and need replaced from time to time as well or else they can damage a belt or cause it to fall off as well.

With very high ceilings the chances of a person or object being damaged or damaging the belts through contact is relatively low, but an exposed mechanism will always pose greater risk to safe and reliable operation than a closed one with all other factors vein equal.

This type of system really just... well- it sucks to live with. It’s not for everyone, or even most people. When the technology was developed there weren’t really better alternatives so it was better than nothing. Most people who install this type of fan won’t even really use it as a method of cooling and will instead primarily rely on AC to regulate temperature. It’s just a curling decoration more or less that one is most likely to find in the homes of the wealthy or corporate owned spaces where a facilities person of some sort has to deal with the care of the system so it is to the owner perceived as trouble free. They have become more common with home owners who want an “antique” aesthetic and don’t care that they could get a better system for less.
