The Brits did protect those items. Had they been found by the local people at the time , they would have quickly been sold and would have ended up who knows where. They were stolen but safe.

I'm not saying the Brits were in the right for taking another countries property, but it would have been destroyed/lost if they hadn't . The Brits had to keep the locals from stealing stone and bricks from some of the ancient sites. The gold would have been melted down and sold along with the jewels. A decade or so later , the Arabs of Tunisia were taking boots, rings, clothing, watches ect off dead soldiers during WW2. They were poor and had different ideas of respect for the dead. So yeah, England did save the artifacts of ancient Egypt .
