And “right” is kinda relative in those cases. When you call a person “gay” as an insult- you aren’t “right” if they aren’t heterosexual because you didn’t mean they were “gay,” you meant they were somehow deficient. When you call the guy that repeated a grade retarded- he may be slow, he may have a disability, he may just have not cared or had trouble- but “retard” as an insult is again- not correct, and as a clinical diagnosis or analog to “stupid” it might be wrong. The woman who slept with the whole team? Is she a “slut”? I dunnoh. Women are allowed to have a sexual appetite- be curious and explore and enjoy sex. But “slut” by definition is a woman who has many casual sexual partners- were those men “casual” to her- or did those relationships have deeper meaning?

Sometimes (more often the less intelligent or more ignorant a person is,) we are convinced we are right when we are in fact- objectively wrong and merely convincing ourselves through self righteousness or delusion that we have all the details and our singular perspective is a valid one from which to issue a judgment.

The term “overthink” is often used as an insult to a person for applying thought to something seemingly inconsequential. But life isn’t mostly made of huge things- most of life are seemingly inconsequential moments and interactions linked together. It’s not an insult that a person actually puts care into their life and actions. It’s not an insult that a person realizes that the majority of their life will be dictated and composed of these small details that make a larger picture like pixels on a screen. By themselves each one is easy to ignore- but of the person designing your screen felt that there was no reason to put in effort into making sure each pixel was as it should be- you could zoom out to the screen and you’d see a mess not a picture.

So underthinking is the insult. It’s an insult to yourself even that you don’t care about your own life enough to invest the time and effort to do the best you can. It’s an insult to society that you would try to interface with them and not bother to put a good faith effort into ensuring the quality of your words.

I would put a bit more effort into my thesis, it would likely be at least 100,000 words- and for a complete dissertation which fully explored a topic of interest is estimate 250 or so pages of standard typography 12pt font. People post memes about politics, law, social issues, philosophy, etc. these are things people have strong opinions on and tend to be complex issues. If people do not want to discuss these issues they should avoid speaking on them. But as a general rule, anything that isn’t worth a reasonable effort probably isn’t worth your time, so if you aren’t going to engage yourself- why bother? But to each their own. It’s “fun” substance and we don’t all have to define “fun” the same way so long as we are respectful of each other’s enjoyment.
