My favorite thing about gold is that it is as worthless as money, but it has the perception of having value that paper doesn't have. It's only value is the value a governing body puts on it, the value someone else has for it, or the value you can put on it.

What use? It has a couple of niche properties, but the only ones I can think of is their usage in advanced technology - something which the average person can't do. It also suggests a pre-existing economic infrastructure.
