Because this one actually makes it better, and makes sense. Pacific islanders are people of the sea. It serves the character better.

Somewhat similar for the little mermaid. If she’s from the more tropical part of the ocean living in the shallower waters, she would be very dark (probably not of African ancestry...) but if she were from deeper waters evolution would have created a body that could better handle the cold dark pressurized depths and she would be pale and very large.
