Was it a waste? It established an insurmountable rift between D and J, fleshed our the history of Westeros- who John was, why Ned took him in like he did, and actually drives the plot of the ending. The ending was rushed. I can fault them that- but I can’t fault where they ended up only how they jumped there. Is it the ending I pictured? No. But- that’s not inherently bad. I make it a point to try my hardest not to judge films on what I want them to be but what they are. “Fan service” is great- but if things goes exactly as we see in our heads there aren’t any surprises are there?

What's so messed up is HBO told them they could have as many seasons as they wanted... but in the last two seasons, especially the last 3 episodes of season 7 and all of season 8 you could see they rushed. I know the Star Wars deal happened, but DAMN... that was an obvious "pz, we out", which is messed up, considering HBO's offer.

I’m with you. I think it’s messed up too. Even handing the show over to someone else- what’s the worst that could happen? They mess up the ending... well.... umm.... I’ll take a maybe over a definitely. They needed at least 1 more season (or twice the length to this one), to carry the audience gracefully into the ending they laid out. Had they not rushed, had they fleshed out some of the ideas and relationships that would make the leaps of season 8 believable and natural to the progress of the show we’ve seen- it could have worked. Oh well.

Everything dies. Sometimes gracefully, sometimes not.
