I think that’s a kitchen paper holder, makes more sense too when the radio is attached to something you keep in the kitchen

Unfortunately I was around when these were actually a thing lol. It's for toilet paper, you can tell because paper towel rolls have always been longer than toilet paper rolls and way thicker. These are actually too close to the wall even for modern toilet paper rolls, back in the day a roll was a lot less dense then they are now. That top part that isn't on right is where you put the batteries, although some of them could actually be wired into the wall
