Can someone explain to me why dark mode is such a thing?

Because normal mode makes my eyes go ouch in low light conditions

I get that part, I just don’t understand the urgency. Phones do have brightness controls.

There's no urgency, I'm just excited to see what'll it look like. And personally, even the lowest brightness setting on my phone bothers me sometimes, especially with colours like white, so a dark background really makes a difference.
