The gray brick appears to be modeled after a “duplo” brick- a line of Lego Play systems aimed at younger kids. Fewer colors and elements, larger scale, and tending to have pieces which are themselves larger singular units to aid in building and play. Duplo is compatible with other Lego systems such as the smaller “bricks” many are more familiar with. The holes in the Duplo stud and scale allow a 2x2 Lego brick to cover the stud snugly and for the peg in the middle of a 2x2 or one of the center pegs on the female side of a similar but larger brick to fit into the middle of the peg.
When building particularly large structures where a base or walls etc. May be used- one can use the larger duplo bricks to form a “skeleton” of the most massive parts, then place standard Lego bricks on the top pegs of the duplo bricks and then “cover” the duplo bricks to not show- giving the illusion a very large mass is solid standard bricks but using far less elements to do so. Duplo bricks (especially used) don’t tend to be as costly by the square area as Lego bricks. There are also other construction techniques with duplo including their visible uses to impart scale or where a more solid appearance is desired.
Lol yeah. Yard sales can be a great source of cheap duplo. Or Lego in general. I once picked up a complete in the box Star Wars star destroyer with instructions and everything except the minifigs (it was the minifig scale star destroyer. Mom bought it for Jr and jr just wanted the figures. Price? $1. Woot. That’s a rare find but I’ve found plenty of god deals at swap meets and yard sales.
Very rarely but SOMETIMES I would find good deals on Craigslist. Usually it’s all gouging and the like- but if you really DIG and avoid key words that people tend to use when buying/selling legos- adult sellers, “collectors” etc- you can score.
