I think it's reasonable to ban the vapes at this stage. We understand the risks and health detrements posed by smoking, and have allowed it to continue based on this.
The disease, or illeffects which have killed people, and left 450 injured are, at present largely undocumented, and they're ending lives suddenly and abruptly, whereas smoking tends to shorten life span, rather than kill within 2-3 years.
What's happening is not acceptable and until we find out what's causing the sharp increase in deaths, and discover and consider all possibilities/side effects of vape/ THC vapez whatever it is, it needs to be (at least) temporarily removed from the market
You bring up good points, smoking is mainly still around because the effects were very late to be brought to public attention and the businesses that profit off of smokers are insanely large. Banning smoking would ruin these large corporations. I don't think vaping has the same income, although I think all forms of smoking are stupid but again, it is an addiction (once you start so just don't do it lads). Like most new forms of drugs or technology, the negatives are pushed under the rug and not acknowledged or studied until too late.
Even through a non-corporation lens, smoking is something that is a choice. You can choose to cut 20-30 years off the end of your life, you can choose to ruin your teeth, throat and lungs.
At this stage, vaping is offering no choice in a short amount of time, because like you said, studies and ill-effects have just been pushed under the rug, it's now simply killing people within years..
To be honest, I think there's been a lot of misconceptions about vaping. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you, but until recently articles about vaping have all been, "it's better than smoking" or "the only bad thing is the nicotine". So not only is it the user who's to blame but also the lack of reliable information available to the public. Of course if you smoke now, you know what you're in for and if you get cancer and die it's not like you didn't know it could happen.

Every time I bring up the dangers of smoking or advocate for greater restrictions, people make fun of me and call me a prude
Trust me people care about the opioid crisis because it effects white people. No one care does about the crack epidemic “just say no to drugs” but now there’s an opioid epidemic and people are calling drug addiction a disease
One on my friends has developed a throat infection because of vaping for around 6 months. I'm pretty sure we need more research to find the effect of vaping on the body, meanwhile its better to be safe than sorry IMO
