"Incilius periglenes" - the poster child for extinction. This tiny toad lived only in a small area north of Monteverde, Costa Rica. They have been gone for 30 years (the last sighting was in 1989) Once the face of Costa Rica's biodiversity, they now serve as reminders of the fragility of life and the need for conservation efforts. (On a brighter note, sometimes species previously thought extinct have been occasionally rediscovered, so maybe someday these jungle jewels will shine again)
