If it was earlier stages of math then you are supposed to be learning technique as much as accuracy. Later math stages depend on you knowing those techniques.

If the question was answered accurately and the teacher has a problem with it, then they should have constructed or worded the problem differently.

My calc teacher this year is fine with it, as long as you show your working
