So apparently, the average age that women had their first period has been steadily decreasing. We can infer, though I’m not sure how valid that would be, that women’s bodies are maturing more quickly than previous generations. So all these memes about “me at fourteen, fourteen year olds now” and their off shoots are just a social observation of this supposed phenomenon. However im speculating and I’ll come back with some actual science, if I can.
So I went to the wiki for Menarche to see if i wasn't pulling that statement out of my ass and it did mention that the age at menarche was lowering but the 29th reference on that page states that in the US the drop in age of maturity is not statistically significant (about 0.34 years earlier than 1973) the study was conducted in 2002. However on a larger time scale it does *seem* that the age is lowering but the studies that concluded that were asking much older women who might have mistaken their age at menarche. the drop seems to be from 15 to 12 years old. The wiki states that fewer than 10% of girls in the us had their first menstruation before age 11 and claims the source of that info on the 29th reference, however i could not access the full paper because my library card expired so i can't confirm that.
In the case of this girl its possible she just matured earlier because puberty and people took her image and ran with it because horny people will be horny even if its nasty.
Can't do the link right now, and it IS interesting, but as far as I was aware this wasn't exactly a new thing? I mean, maybe in the scope of humanity's entire existence it is, but pretty much every girl I ever talked to had already gotten their periods by age 13 at the latest for the last few decades. Most got it earlier than that. Even women from my mom's generation that I've talked to tended to get them around the same time
.
And 70% of them didn't look or dress like the girl in this pic.
.
I imagine part of that has to do with them not wanting to be skinned alive by their parents, and not having social media as a motivating factor. And no, I'm not BLAMING social media for anything here before anyone hops on that pitchfork. Just saying far less women took pics of the sand in their ass cracks before they had Instagram to post it on, so clearly some people find it an incentive to take certain types of pictures. That's all.
