Fun fact cats are far sighted, for locating things near them they rely on their whiskers and sense of smell and movement of the object in front of them

Yes the movement itself and a short intensification from the smell makes them aware there in fact is still food

The fly is moving, catching the cats attention. The food doesnt move so the cat has to rely on its sense if smell
