Well, intersex, or unclear gender, in births is about 1 per 1000 people. The important thing is not to surgically alter the child's body unless absolutely necessary. There are some real horror stories out there about people who were surgically altered at birth without even the parents being told.
A guy in my class a few years back told me that when he was born, his penis was inwards and his testicles hadn't fully descended yet so he was called Océane before one of the doctors noticed "something" and surgery was performed to put his testices back in place from his belly. He showed me the scar :D ...and I may have called him Océane for a while after that.
Yeah, he has absolutely no concept of boundaries or privacy. I had to ask him not to look through my phone texts once because he was bored and he was just surprised and apologetic. Pretty cool guy though, super smart, we had great conversations about anything and everything.
Edit : I shall clarify that the scar was on his belly. He probably had one of his testicles as well but we were in the university parking lot so... there's a time and place for everything!
