I liked having heated floors through the house. Was it worth it? Debatable. That house was built from an untouched plot spat least the design already included them. Unless I lived somewhere really cold or was really sensitive I doubt I’d bother to renovate an existing house to include them. Although ceiling heating is starting to look promising- but the one I really want to try eventually is subterranean.

Basically- you dig up the whole “yard” area and place heat sinks under the ground. The system more or less just requires electricity to run fans/pumps to circulate heat. If set up right and a good location is chosen- the idea is that in the summer- the ambient underground temps are much lower. The system exchanges heat from the house into the cool ground. In winter- the opposite is true and you exchange hotter underground temps for cooler ambient temps. No refrigerant or gas etc. needed. They can be very efficient and keep a stable temperature.

If the temps get very extreme where you live (hot or cold) it can overcome the systems ability to heat or cool- and you won’t really get “ice cold” or “toasty hot” out of it- more... “comfortable norm.” But the system can be coupled with HVAC to overcome these issues. In milder weather you don’t need to touch the HVAC and save money (and theoretically the planet- especially coupled with solar etc-) but if you want or need more you add the HVAC but see lower bills and environmental impact because the load is lighter for the difference the HVAC has to make up.

And for those who don’t care about bills or theoretical environmental gains- in extreme weather it can boost the performance of your HVAC system by acting as a “helper”
