I like to ask my old classmates what they are doing just because I'm interested in their lives but mostly because I like to see how far they've deviated from their goal in school. Example is one of my friends, lovely girl who was going to become a doctor. Turns out this is what her parents and teachers wanted and now that she's got her own life she's becoming a primary school teacher and it's so nice to see that pressure of other people's idea of 'success' drop so they can do what they actually want.
It can be fun. Just to see how much people have changed. I went to primary school with a sweet and gentle seeming girl who grew up to design next generation military weapons with an arms firm. The class slacker/cut up became a pastor and a mellow family man, so many stories of seeing people and how much they’ve changed (or not changed) over the years and life. Who the hell are we to judge anyway? Looking at a life from outside a person who loves every day and is happy could look like a “washout” and a person who looks like they have it all can be miserable.
Exactly, it's that dangerous need for these strange ideals that prevent lots of people from living their most ideal life. It's a funny sad kind of contradiction but you can see why it's so easy to fall into.
I went to school with a LOT of rich kids. Yeah I EASILY know they are more successful. I do kind of like hearing that I only got married one time while they are on their 2nd, 3rd, and 1 is on her 5th and my kid is more talented and smarter than theirs. But truthfully I tend to compare my life to my cousins and brothers. I mean we all come from the same background so seeing who is more successful really hits a bit harder and makes each thing I have better tends to make it seem a bigger accomplishment.
Even though you really shouldn't compare your life to others I never take to heart what I don't have and others do have. What I make sure to do is only see what makes my life better than theirs and be forever grateful that I have that.
