This is stupid as fuck. I hate this thing about not asking about salaries (yeah, I get why it's not encouraged) but for it to be a big no-no?? It's not a fucking state secret, chill. Maybe teach your kids how to work with money instead of making it this big scary motherfucking mountain of vipers.
It’s worse than that. The concept of your salary being private is perpetuated by businesses to keep unfair disparities in pay from coming to light. We should all share our salaries with our coworkers to make sure that we are all being paid a relatively fair wage.

Not to say that there aren’t individual factors for each person’s exact wage but I have personally witnessed a new hire coming in at 150% of an existing employee simply because they had worked with the department director in the past. The new hire had no experience in the role and no certifications vs the existing one who had both. That sort of thing wouldn’t happen if we talked openly about compensation.
